Why a website?

MDNauck.com is a web archive established to introduce the oeuvre of Mark 'Donnie' Nauck, covering freelance work, internship experience, and undergraduate projects in the fields of home design, professional architecture and interiors, and graphic design. It's about how the work is made, not just what the work is, or what it looks like. Design is a problem solving and problem seeking exercise meant to evoke a feeling like, "of course it's that way. Why would it be any other way?" It is the designer who looks for ways to improve the way people live, without them really knowing or thinking about it.

Good design should be innovate.

Good design should make the thing useful.

Good design is aesthetic design.

Good design will make itself understandable.

Good design is honest.

Good design is unobtrusive.

Good design is long-lived.

Good design is consistent in every detail.

Good design is environmentally responsive.

Good design is as little design as necessary.

The work found at MDNauck.com centers on these principles. Whether traditional, critical, or utopian in style, the projects found here respond to the context in which they find themselves. Out of this relationship the work presents things not specific to form, but the ideas behind its appearance. How does this thing make me feel? Does this space compliment the experience I'm having? Does my engagement with the design satisfy me? These are the type of questions good designers ask themselves about the things they make. MDNauck.com presents itself honestly so that you can project yourself into the work found here and ask yourself those same questions.

Formed in late 2010, MDNauck.com is a place where potential employers, prospective clients, and my friends, family, and peers can go to get a better idea of what it is that I do. Thank you for your interest in my work. Enjoy the site.
